The boy who died for half an hour: The incredible story of how baby Alfie survived THREE heart attacks

He had three heart attacks in three hours at just three weeks old.

After the first, Alfie Green’s heart stopped for 17 minutes – but incredibly, it started again.

It then stopped for ten minutes after the second attack and two minutes after the third – and again he pulled through.

And despite fears that he would be left with massive brain damage, and a week on a ventilator during which his condition was touch and go, he has made a full recovery.

The baby’s resilience stunned doctors who had almost given up on bringing him back to life. They said his brain seemed to have repaired itself.

His mother Stacey, 24, said: ‘I didn’t even know that someone so young could even have a heart attack – let alone three.

‘When his heart stopped beating for so long we really thought we had lost him. But he’s such a little fighter. When it started beating again I just cried with relief.’

Alfie was born weighing a healthy 6lb2 in September. Three weeks later Miss Green and Alfie's father Leonard Bratt, 25, took him out shopping near their home when he stopped breathing.

Miss Green, a special needs teaching assistant, said: ‘A few days previously I had noticed that his breathing was quicker.

‘I took him to the doctors who listened to his chest and said he was fine.

‘But then he suddenly became very unsettled when we were out shopping and as I was trying to soothe him his lips started to turn purple. Then he stopped breathing. It was terrifying.’

Mr Bratt called paramedics and Alfie was taken to Newcross Hospital in Wolverhampton, where doctors said he had suffered a heart attack and his heart had stopped for 17 minutes.

They tried to resuscitate him, and finally he began breathing again. But the ordeal was far from over.

In the next two hours, Alfie had two further heart attacks, his heart stopping for ten minutes and then two minutes.

Each time, doctors managed to restart his heart, but a CT scan showed bleeding had severely damaged the left side of his brain.

Miss Green said: ‘The doctors told us that if Alfie did pull through, it was likely that the only thing he would be able to do was breathe.’

The following day the couple had Alfie christened in his hospital bed, but still he hung on. Miss Green said: ‘I called his name and he turned his head to look at me, so I knew that he was still fighting on.’

After nearly a week on a ventilator, he was well enough to breathe on his own. And three weeks later he was allowed back to the family home in Wolverhampton with medication to stabilise his heart rate.

Miss Green said: ‘Thankfully we have had no more scares. He has reached all his developmental milestones.

'An ultrasound has shown his brain is normal – and the doctors said it was amazing, but his brain appeared to have mended itself.

‘If he survived three heart attacks at three weeks old, he’s strong enough to survive anything.’

Energy drinks 'can make children pile on pounds' because they're not active enough

Energy drinks have up to 14 times more caffeine than other soft drinks, study finds.

Children given energy drinks could pile on the pounds because they are not active enough to burn off the extra calories, warn doctors.

They say energy drinks – which contain between 10 and 270 calories a serving – should never be given to children.

Instead they should be offered water to quench their thirst, and drink the recommended daily amount of fruit juice and low-fat milk with meals.

Caffeine loaded: Doctors are warning against giving children energy drinks which contain stimulants linked to diabetes, heart problems, behaviour problems and even early death

A hidden problem with energy drinks is caffeine, which can reach toxic levels up to 14 times greater than in other soft drinks. The stimulant has been linked to seizures, diabetes, heart problems and behavioural disorders.

Children’s doctors are renewing warnings about energy drinks, and the potential harm from sports drinks, following an expert report by members of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Nutrition.

Dr Holly Benjamin, a lead author of the report, and a doctor at the Comer Children’s Hospital, part of the University of Chicago, said: ‘For most children engaging in routine physical activity, plain water is best.’

She said most children’s activity levels are too low to burn off calorie-laden drinks that ‘children don’t need, and could contribute to obesity and tooth decay’. Dr Marcie Beth Schneider, joint lead author of the report who practises adolescent and paediatric medicine in Connecticut, said: ‘There is a lot of confusion about sports drinks and energy drinks and adolescents are often unaware of the differences.

‘Some kids are drinking energy drinks – containing large amounts of caffeine – when their goal is simply to rehydrate after exercise. This means they are ingesting large amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, which can be dangerous.

‘In many cases it can be hard to tell how much caffeine is in a product by looking at the label.

‘Some cans or bottles of energy drinks can have more than 500mg of caffeine, which is the equivalent of 14 cans of soda.’
'DANGER DRINKS'

The study published in the journal, Paediatrics, highlights these energy and sports drinks:

Red Bull
Monster
Rockstar
All Sport
Gatorade
Powerade

Among the energy brands highlighted in the report were Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar. Sports drinks included All Sport, Gatorade and Powerade.

In February, U.S. doctors warned of health risks from energy drinks and said they should be regulated ‘like alcohol and tobacco’.

Their report, published in the journal Pediatrics, also said: ‘Sports and energy drinks are being marketed to children and adolescents for a wide variety of inappropriate uses.

‘The caloric content of sports drinks is 10 to 70 calories per serving, and the caloric content of energy drinks ranges from 10 to 270 calories per serving.

‘In general, there is little need for carbohydrate-containing beverages other than the recommended daily intake of fruit juice and low-fat milk.

‘Routine ingestion of carbohydrate-containing sports drinks by children and adolescents should be avoided or restricted.

‘Intake can lead to excessive caloric consumption and an increased risk of obesity as well as dental erosion.’

Mobile phones may cause cancer, warn world health chiefs: After years of contradictory claims, an authoritative verdict

Mobile phone owners were urged to limit their use last night after the World Health Organisation admitted they may cause cancer.

The UN’s health agency advised ‘pragmatic’ measures to reduce exposure, such as using hands-free kits and texting instead of calling.

The disturbing report marks the first time the WHO has linked mobiles with cancer, and follows earlier research linking just half an hour’s use a day with up to 40 per cent higher odds of brain cancer.

However the mobile phone industry was quick to point out that the devices had not been directly shown to cause cancer.

More than 70million mobile phones are now in use in Britain – more than one for every man, woman and child. Worldwide, the total tops five billion.

Dr Christopher Wild, director of the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, said: ‘Given the potential consequences for public health, it is important that additional research be conducted into the long-term, heavy use of mobile phones.

‘Pending the availability of such information, it is important to take pragmatic measures to reduce exposure, such as hands-free devices and texting.’

IARC’s conclusion follows a week-long review of all available scientific evidence by 21 scientists from 14 countries, including fresh research that has yet to be published.

The working group concluded that mobile phone use is ‘possibly carcinogenic’, a term which places the phones in the middle of five tiers of possible carcinogens.

Federer and Djokovic remain on target for barnstorming semi-final

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic stayed on course for a blockbuster semi-final clash at the French Open as they both made light work of potentially tricky fourth-round encounters.

Federer beat Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 while Djokovic made it 41 wins for the year and 43 in a row in total by brushing aside Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Both were somewhat upstaged by Djokovic's next opponent Fabio Fognini, though, after he saved five match points and defied injury to beat Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.

Victory for Djokovic over the Italian would see him tie John McEnroe's record start to a season from 1984 of 42 straight wins, while he would also only be two away from Guillermo Vilas' all-time record of 46 victories.

Federer registered his ninth win from 10 matches against Wawrinka, who also lost to his friend at the same stage at Roland Garros last year and in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January.

Wawrinka had fought back from two sets down to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday and he looked set to mount another comeback when he went a break up at the start of the third today, but Federer was having none of it.

The 29-year-old said: 'I'm very happy with the way it went. I knew the danger coming into this match on clay. I still think it is his best surface, even though maybe it's been somewhat of a disappointing clay-court season for him.'

Federer set his own record by reaching a 28th consecutive grand slam quarter-final, breaking the mark he jointly held with Jimmy Connors - although the American missed a number of Australian and French Opens.

With his win over Juan Martin Del Potro yesterday, Djokovic moved past Federer's best unbeaten run of 41 matches from 2006/07.

Giving an insight into the Serb's mindset, Federer said: "I think you definitely feel invincible at times. But in a knockout system like we have in tennis, you're never quite sure.

The trickier part is all of a sudden you think I'm winning so much, eventually somebody's going to snap that streak. When everybody started to talk about it, the more likely it was going to happen. It's kind of tough to keep your head down and just focus.'

Wawrinka insisted he does still believe he can beat Federer, saying: "I don't think it's a mental thing. Today I felt I was not playing a bad match. There was even a time when I felt I played well, but it just was not enough.'

Fognini looked down and out on a number of occasions during his four-hour-and-22-minute match against Montanes, trailing by a break in the decider and then receiving treatment to his left leg in the 14th game when he was only two points from defeat.

The Italian was clearly struggling but Montanes could not take advantage of match points at 7-8 or 8-9 and he was then broken before Fognini, in the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time, served out a remarkable win.

He admitted he could be struggling to be fit to face Djokovic, though, saying: "I believed it was cramp but it is not cramp. At the moment I am in a lot of pain. I really don't know what will happen.

'I'm happy because I'm in the quarter-finals but I'm very tired. Of course I should have lost this match. But tennis is a sport where anything can happen.'

Montanes seemed annoyed by Fognini's use of the trainer at such a crucial point, but he declined to criticise the Italian afterwards, saying: "Everybody does what they have to do.

'Everybody plays their game. He played really well. I'd like to congratulate him and wish him all the best for the matches to come.'

Aston Villa in the hunt for Fulham boss Hughes as Houllier chases £5m pay-off

Fulham boss Mark Hughes is the man Aston Villa want to replace Gerard Houllier, heading a five-man short list drawn up by the Midlands club's owner Randy Lerner.

Fulham chief executive Alistair Mackintosh tried to head off the move by issuing a stern 'hands-off' warning to Villa but if Hughes fails to activate his rolling contract at Fulham in the next 24 hours, he will become a free agent and make himself the clear favourite to succeed Houllier.

Should Hughes decide to stay at Fulham, Lerner will turn to others he has identified to take Villa forward. Everton's David Moyes and Wigan's Roberto Martinez are in the frame, while Steve McClaren and Martin Jol have also been mentioned.

Senior figures at Villa were tied up with more pressing matters as Houllier hampered the club's search for a replacement with legal wrangling over the size of his pay-off. As reported in Sportsmail, Houllier has medical reports that state he is fit to return. Villa contest those.

Clauses in the manager's contract protect the club from a pay-out in excess of £5million if the Frenchman is forced out by ill-health.

What is in dispute is whether his employment is being terminated because of that or if he is being sacked.

Lerner wants to avoid a repeat of the Martin O'Neill affair. The American billionaire had to face a Premier League arbitration panel last week after O'Neill contested the terms of his exit.

When Houllier's departure is finally confirmed, 'mutual consent' will be listed as the reason but there can be no doubt that from Villa's viewpoint this is a divorce of convenience. The marriage has always been an uneasy one and even Houllier's unveiling ended in little more than a public-relations disaster when he was unable to confirm his release from his job with the France Football Federation.

Since then the club have been troubled by on-field problems, off-field squabbles and fights. The French manager has battled with his players, including Stephen Ireland, John Carew, Richard Dunne and Stephen Warnock, as Villa lurched through their league campaign.

As if the club did not have enough problems, two of their England players - Ashley Young and Stewart Downing - refused to commit their futures to Villa.

Young's position is unsurprising after Manchester United made tentative contact for the winger. He said: 'I did find myself sat (watching the Champions League final) thinking, "I wish I was out there". My opinion is that I can play in the biggest and best competitions.

'To challenge myself is to play in big competitions and hopefully one day I'll be able to do that.'

Downing's utterances were little short of a come-and-get-me plea. 'You sit at home and watch the Champions League, you hear the music come on and you see the teams and you think, "This is where I want to be. It's my ambition to play in it and I'd like to do that at some stage in my career".'

Asked whether he will be a Villa player next season, he added: 'I'm not sure. If I don't move and I stay, I'll get on with the job.'

Hiddink opens door for Chelsea return after hinting he is ready to work in two jobs

Guus Hiddink has given the clearest indication yet that he is ready to answer Roman Abramovich's call and return as Chelsea manager.

Last week, the Dutchman fuelled speculation that he would become Carlo Ancelotti's successor by refusing to commit his future to the Turkey national side, as well as revealing his desire to return to club management.

And his apparent resolve to become Chelsea's next manager seemed to strengthen after hinting he is even open to combining managing the Blues with his current job as Turkey boss

Hiddink - who has kept in regular contact with Abramovich since his departure as caretaker manager in 2009 - told a Turkish newspaper: 'There is no official offer yet, but I can't guarantee anything.

'I haven't told the chairman (Mahmut Ozgener) what my thoughts are yet. But he is an intelligent man - I'm sure he follows the world's media.'

Hiddink's current deal with Turkey expires after Euro 2012 - but he added: 'I never told anybody I was going to continue working here.

'The team is focused on me, I would affect the team negatively if I answered the speculation.

'I feel so energetic, so a club role is more preferable. That's what I like, working everyday. I feel I need to do more.

'I've trained Australia and PSV at the same time, as well as Russia and Chelsea and I was very happy. We'll see what happens with Turkey.'

Hiddink is currently preparing for Turkey's crunch Euro 2012 qualifier against Belgium on Friday. Defeat would leave Turkey with an uphill struggle to qualify for next summer's tournament and would leave serious question marks over Hiddink's future.

That could clear the path for Abramovich to put together a suitable compensation package for the Turkish FA in his efforts to land Hiddink.

The Dutchman also insisted that Chelsea's billionaire owner is yet to make a formal approach for his services.

Djokovic marches on

PARIS: Novak Djokovic made it 40 wins in a row this year by defeating Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last 16 of the French Open on Saturday.

In a match held over from late Friday when the two men parted company at one set all, Djokovic once again showed the composure and killer instinct that has been a feature of his stunning unbeaten run since January.

He will next play back-to-form Frenchman Richard Gasquet for a place in the quarter-finals in a tie that is sure to fire up the partisan Paris crowd on Sunday.

The match resumed out on the Suzanne Lenglen showcourt 18 hours after fading light had forced them off and Djokovic was the first to be put under pressure saving a break point in the fifth game after a 23-shot rally.

But in the following game he broke Del Potro to take a 4-2 lead and from there he comfortably pocketed the second set.

The tempo and ball-striking continued to be fierce into the fourth set and once again it was Djokovic who struck first setting up two break points in the third game with a deft drop shot after a punishing 26-stroke rally.

Del Potro saved the first of these but an untimely double fault followed and Djokovic had the break.

The second seed got to 4-1 and serving, but let his concentration slip for once to allow Del Potro to get to 0-30.

The giant Argentinian then defied his size by sprinting in to return a near perfect Djokovic drop shot and when the Serb blasted long, the South American had a lifeline.

It did not last long.

Djokovic once again unleashed a salvo of big hits off both flanks and Del Potro was unable to stay the pace, fluffing a weak backhand into the net on set point.

The Serb comfortably served out for his 40th consecutive win in 2011.

Djokovic will match John McEnroe’s 42-match winning streak set from the start of 1984 should he reach the semi-finals here.

He is also aiming to become the first player since Jim Courier in 1992 to win the Australian and French Open titles in the same year, taking him halfway to the fabled Grand Slam of tennis.

Bencana Yang Tidak Boleh Ditangani

Pairin Umum Kolej KDM Akan Dibina Di Tambunan

- BERNAMA

Keluarga punca ramai kanak-kanak hilang

Sehingga kini kedua-dua mereka masih belum ditemui.

Tewas 'Mentor 5', Iqa & Ayish Jadi Artis KRU

Mengapa Ramai Melayu Suka Tinggal Di Australia?

- BERNAMA

Self-defence or murder? Outrage as pharmacist who shot 16-year-old trying to rob his shop gets life sentence

A controversial decision to send a pharmacist to jail for life for shooting dead a young man who tried to rob his store has caused a storm of protest.

Jerome Ersland was given a life sentence for the first-degree murder of 16-year-old Antwun Parker at an Oklahoma court last week.

The 59-year-old pharmacist shot the youngster six times during an attempted armed robbery in 2009, leading jurors to decide he had acted beyond the limits of self defence.

R

Thousands in the area have, however, reacted furiously to the decision, insisting Mr Ersland had simply acted to protect himself, his store and his customers.

The debate has now moved online, with many joining groups in his support and ones that argue his punishment is deserved on Facebook.

The argument is similarly divided on social networking site Twitter, with thousands sending out messages of support for either Ersland or the justice system.

One group on Facebook, titled 'Jerome Ersland should not have been found guilty' has more than 2,500 members.

Others, such as the 'Jerome Ersland got what he deserved' group have also attracted much attention.

There have also been petition sites started which hope to send more than 5,000 signatories to the government following the controversial court case.

Support has also come from notable public figures, including Oklahoma State Senator Ralph Shortey.

'I'm gonna spend the rest of my career, however long it may be, trying to right this wrong,' he told A

Dramatic CCTV footage from May 19 2009 shows Antwun Parker and an accomplice running into the Reliable Discount Pharmacy in south Oklahoma City and pointing a gun directly at Mr Ersland

The pharmacist, who was once an Air Force lieutenant colonel, can then be seen reaching for a pistol of his own before firing at the two young men, with one of the shots hitting Parker to the ground.
TO SHOOT OR NOT TO SHOOT? THE LAW

Self-defence can be argued in court but it must be proved at trial that these actions are justified.

As a general rule, a person can use reasonable force if they are genuinely threatened with an impending injury.

A person using force in self-defence, though, should use only so much force as is required to repel the attack - but no more.

Deadly force can be used to fend off an attacker who is using deadly force but not one who is using non-deadly force.

In some cases, the law recommends that the person under threat should try to flee before fighting back if at all possible.

Courts have held, however, that a person is not required to flee from his own home, the fenced ground surrounding the home, his place of business, or his car.

After chasing the accomplice from the store, Ersland then gets a second gun before shooting Parker another five times, almost a minute after he fired the first gunshot.

In court, Mr Ersland's attorneys insisted their client had acted in self-defence.

Defence lawyer Irven Box asked jurors to close their eyes and imagine what they would do if they were confronted with the same situation.

'He eliminated the armed robber,' Box said.

Box added to ABC News that the pharmacist had shot repeatedly because he saw Parker was still moving after the first hit so deemed him still to be a threat.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Chance, however, argued that: 'This defendant was absolutely not defending himself or anyone else.'

The jury responded after three and a half hours of deliberation by recommending a life sentence.

Ersland must now be sentenced by Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott on July 11.

If he upholds the jury's decision, Ersland will not be eligible for parole for at least 38 years.

Ersland's lawyers said they would appeal the murder conviction

Rooney: Messi's the best, but he's not suited to playing in Premier League

Wayne Rooney has revealed he is still reeling from the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona, but has claimed it would be difficult for Lionel Messi to have the same devastating impact if he played in the Premier League.

Rooney joined talkSPORT pundits Richard Keys and Andy Gray while his England team-mates trained ahead of the EURO 2012 qualifier with Switzerland - a game the Manchester United forward will miss through suspension.

He agreed with Sir Alex Ferguson that Pep Guardiola's side is the best he's ever encountered, but believes Messi would need the support of the Barcelona midfield to prosper in England

Asked if Messi could dictate games in the England as he does in Spain, Rooney said: 'If you bring Xavi and Iniesta with him, yes. But it would be difficult, almost impossible for him to play as he does in Spain.

'The game is more physical here, going to the likes of Birmingham and Stoke away is very demanding. Cristiano Ronaldo is more suited to the English game than Messi. Cristiano is taller and good in the air.'

On defeat in the showpiece Wembley final Rooney said: 'It hurt. I watched the game again because you can always learn by watching football. It was very disappointing but you have to put your hands up and say they were the better team.

'They are the best team I’ve seen and Lionel Messi the best player. I think he got three nutmegs in the first-half. On my PlayStation I can make him do what I want but he’s even better in real life. The speed he moves his legs, in fact his whole body, is amazing.

'Messi wins them games but Xavi and Andres Inesta destroy you. They are simply a fantastic team, a very special side. That’s the level we want to be at and we have to up our game to achieve this. The manager will be doing what he can to see we do this.

'The plan was to try to win the ball from them as high up as possible and not allow them time on the ball. We didn’t want to allow them to dictate play.

'I was told to stay as close to Sergio Busquets as possible and break off him when we had the ball. At times they had six in midfield with Messi and David Villa dropping back.'

And Rooney has lauded Paul Scholes as the best player he has ever played with. Scholes confirmed his retirement this morning, ending a 17-year career that brought him 10 league titles.

One of the quiet men at Old Trafford, Scholes did not even tell his team-mates what his future plans were. However, it had looked increasingly likely the 36-year-old would call it a day, leaving Rooney with a sense of loss.
'He will be missed greatly,' Rooney told TalkSPORT. 'He is definitely the best player I have played with.

'I tried to ask him what he was doing but you don't get much out of him. I didn't think it would come this quickly. Everyone will be sad to see him stop. He is a great player.'

Twenty stone schoolboy,10, becomes the youngest person ever to have a gastric band op

A 20 stone 10-year-old has become the youngest boy ever to have a gastic band operation.

Schoolboy Ksithijj Jindger was so overweight that his parents took the drastic step of paying for weight loss surgery.

The youngster was already eight stone by the age of three - and despite his parents' best efforts to make his portions smaller he continued to balloon in size.

Ksithijj, from a wealthy suburb of Chennai, India, had been spoilt with rich, fattening meals since he was a little boy and could not stop growing.

Doctors have never carried out the dangerous surgery on anyone so young before, but surprisingly it was a success, and a year later Ksithijj has shed an amazing nine stone, making him 11stone at 11.

'We're so pleased,' said his mother. 'He used to be so overweight, we worried he might die before he saw his 11th birthday.'
Slim: Schoolboy now weighs 11 stone - and at one point lost three stone in three months

Slim: Schoolboy now weighs 11 stone - and at one point lost three stone in three months

Ksithijj's mother had been serving up calorie-rich curries and bread which caused Ksithijj weight to soar to a shocking fourteen stone by the time he was five.

'We did not understand we were doing the wrong thing,' she said.

'Obesity never used to be such a big problem here. He loved eating and I wanted to spoilt him, but his weight got out of hand.'

Ksithijj got so big he could not run around like other boys and got out of breath just walking a few steps, or climbing up stairs.

He weighed two and a half stone at two, and after that his weight kept growing, so he was 16.5 stone at seven, and 20-stone when he was nine and a half.

His mother and dad took Ksithijj to their GP, who told them to put him on a strict diet and exercise programme.

But the couple were so worried the diet would not work, they decided he should have gastric surgery and amazingly were able to find an Indian doctor willing to carry out the controversial op on a little boy.

Weight-loss surgery is not normally carried out on teenagers under 16 in the UK.

But in places like India, where obesity is starting to become a problem for the first time, younger and younger patients are now going under the knife.

Thankfully, the surgery helped Ksithijj lose his massive appetite, as he could no longer eat large meals, and he began having small portions of healthy, plain, vegetable dishes.

'He looks like a completely different boy now,' said his mum. 'He has grown up and yet he is half the size.

'He can play cricket with his friends now and he has started going to the gym.

'We're glad we took the drastic action, even though our GP told us it was too dangerous.

Our GP now refuses to give medical treatment to any of the family, because he didn't agree with what we did.'

Ksithijj is still rapidly losing weight, and recently lost three stone in just three months.

He hopes to soon be the average size for his age and then to maintain his weight by staying away from calorie-ridden traditional meals.

Let me stay! Owen tells United boss Fergie that he wants to remain at Old Trafford

Michael Owen once again has confirmed his desire to remain at Manchester United after taking part in the club's open-top bus parade around the city on Monday morning.

The former England striker is out of contract this summer but insists he wants to stay at Old Trafford despite his bit-part role for Sir Alex Ferguson's side over the past two seasons.

Owen also claimed Saturday's defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final should not be allowed to put a dampener on the campaign after the team secured their record-breaking 19th Barclays Premier League title.

When you start every season the first objective is to win the league,' said Owen, who scored five goals this season to add to the nine he hit in the 2009/10 season after leaving Newcastle.

'What happened at the weekend should not be allowed to detract from that. I have loved every minute; we have great players, great staff, great manager and great fans. Hopefully it can continue.'

Sir Alex Ferguson calls for English academies to change and follow the Barcelona blueprint

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that English clubs will never reach the heights of football artistry reached by Barcelona in the Champions League final until the authorities change their philosophy about how youngsters are coached.

The Manchester United manager joined his squad on an open-top bus parade in the rain yesterday as the beaten European Cup finalists drew solace from winning a record 19th league title.

Thoughts remain with United’s failure to get to grips with Barcelona at Wembley, though, and Ferguson called for change in the way youngsters are coached in England.

He said: ‘We are only allowed to coach youngsters for an hour and a half a week. Barcelona can coach them every hour of the day if they want. It’s a great philosophy.’

Ferguson’s comments point to the fact that young players at Barca are coached regularly from an early age. In England the academy system, combined with the demands of mainstream education, means that between the ages of 10 and 18 a footballer will receive between 2,000 and 3,000 coaching hours. At Barcelona, youngsters receive about 8,000.

What will please Ferguson is the content of the Elite Player Performance Plan that will be voted on at the League’s AGM next week. Premier League insiders claim the plan represents a radical overhaul of the way youngsters are coached and one of its key aims is to increase the time spent working on skills.

United’s parade was more muted than it would have been had they beaten Barcelona, but Ferguson still led his players in a rendition of ‘Are you watching, Merseyside?’ as the club celebrated passing the 18 titles won by Liverpool.

“Saya menangis malam tadi.

- Agensi
